SAM'S ISLAND
Sam Ostojich arrived in the Pilbara in the 1960's and fell in love with Tidepole Island, now affectionately referred to as ‘Sam’s Island’. Located only a short distance across the water from the Dampier foreshore, Sam’s Island is an historic and iconic Pilbara landmark. Over four decades, Sam transformed the rocky site by hand, creating an oasis and building his own castle which he called home.
Please take care if visiting the Sam’s Island, as damage from recent cyclones has made some parts of the castle walls unstable.
A locally produced book ‘King of His Castle’ which recounts the history of Sam’s Island, is available to purchase from the DCA Office. For enquiries please use our online enquiry form or contact the DCA.
