REPORT A FAULT: 1800 992 777

Rio Tinto operates and manages electricity and water infrastructure in the town of Dampier, in a way that ensures safe and reliable essential services are consistently delivered to our town.

Your account

For more information about your electricity supply please call the Rio Tinto Pilbara Service Desk on 1800 992 777.

You can find more information on Rio Tinto’s invoicing and meter reading policy in a document of the same name which can be viewed in our Document Centre.

Connections

For all new connections to the Dampier electricity network an electricity account application form will need to be submitted. All new installations are required to be fully inspected prior to being energised. A full inspection of the new installation ensures that the electrical installation is safe to energise.

Electricity tips and checklists

There are a few things to check before assuming that your power bill is too high. Look at the following checklist and if you may find the answer for your increases electricity usage.

  • Have I had visitors for an extended period?
  • Has there been a caravan in my backyard connected to mains power?
  • Have I recently started using bigger appliances - dishwasher, freezer, larger washing machine, pool pump?
  • Does my air-conditioner need a maintenance check?
  • Have I been using an electric welder or other power tools during the past few months?
  • Have I taken up a new leisure activity that uses electricity, such as rolling gem stones or using a pottery wheel and kiln?
  • Do my hot water tap washers need to be replaced?
  • Do I relax in a hot bath more often than taking a quick shower?
  • Do I use hot water in the washing machine? If so, is my temperature set on a low setting?
  • Do I leave more doors and windows open during the day than the neighbours, making the air-conditioner work harder?

Planned Network Outages

Rio Tinto attempts to carry out necessary maintenance work on the network without interrupting your power supply.

However, on occasions, Rio Tinto may need to interrupt your supply to perform planned maintenance on the network, respond to an emergency or in very rare instances shed electrical load on the network when electricity demand exceeds generated supply.

Unless it is an emergency, Rio Tinto will give you at least three working days notice before a planned power interruption. This notice may be through advertising, individual notices, telephone, SMS, email, letter or fax.

If Rio Tinto does need to interrupt your power supply, there are things you should be aware of:

  • Access to your meter box may be required. Please ensure all entry gates are unlocked and dogs are properly secured.
  • It is recommended that you switch of sensitive electronic and electrical appliances prior to the scheduled power interruption, including TVs and DVD players.
  • Cordless phones do not operate without mains power, so keep a standard phone or mobile phone handy in case of an emergency.
  • Automatic garage doors, security gates, lift and elevators may not operate during a power interruption, so you may wish to make alternative arrangements.
  • Avoid opening fridge and freezer doors unnecessarily during planned power interruptions.
  • If you have solar panels, your electricity inverter will automatically switch off when power loss occurs and switch back on when power is restored.
  • After the power has been restored please ensure all alarm clocks, reticulation systems and security gates (if you have a monitored security alarm without a backup battery, advise your security company of the power interruption) have been reset. Rio Tinto may cancel a planned power interruption due to inclement weather or unforeseen circumstances without notice.
